Nickname
Seminoles - The Florida State Seminoles' nickname has been a part of the university's identity since 1947. The origin of this iconic moniker is steeped in history and tradition, making it one of the most recognizable nicknames in college sports.
The name was initially adopted by students at Florida State University (FSU) to honor the Seminole people who had lived on land that eventually became FSU’s campus for centuries before its establishment. The school began using Native American imagery shortly after World War II when many universities sought ways to show their patriotism and respect for indigenous cultures across America.
In 1947, FSU student body president Claude L'Engle proposed “Seminoles” as a tribute to these original inhabitants; legend has it that he chose this particular word because no other colleges or universities were using it then! This decision quickly gained support from students and faculty alike; soon enough, "Seminoles" was officially adopted by FSU as its official mascot and nickname – becoming one of only two collegiate teams with Native American-inspired names (Stanford University).
Today, fans proudly wear garnet & gold colors while cheering on their beloved team - whether they're playing football or basketball - all while honoring those whose legacy still lives strong within our state: The Original People Of Florida – The Seminole Nation!

History of the Seminoles
The Florida State Seminoles are among the NCAA's most successful college sports teams. The team has won three national championships, 18 conference titles, and numerous individual awards. From its inception in 1947 to today, the Seminoles have been consistently competitive and often dominant, establishing a notable rivalry with the Clemson Tigers.
The success of FSU’s athletic program can be attributed mainly to legendary head coach Bobby Bowden who led them from 1976-2009. Under his leadership, they earned two national championships (1993 & 1999) and 14 ACC Championships during that period alone! Additionally, he was named National Coach of the Year four times at FSU – a testament to his coaching prowess and impact on their success over those years.
Today Florida State continues its traditional excellence with another great coach Willie Taggart leading them into a new era for their football program, especially after recently winning both an Orange Bowl Championship (2013) and an ACC Atlantic Division title (2018). With such a rich history, it is no surprise why so many fans flock yearly to cheer on this storied university's beloved Seminole athletes, especially during their heated rivalries with teams like the Miami Hurricanes!
