Nickname
Hoyas - The Georgetown Hoyas are one of the most successful NCAA programs in history. With a rich tradition and an impressive alumni list, it's no wonder that so many fans proudly wear their colors and cheer on the team. But have you ever wondered where the name “Hoyas” came from?
It turns out that there is quite a bit of mystery surrounding this nickname. Some historians have suggested that it was derived from either "hoi polloi," which is Greek for “the many,” or "Hoya Saxa," which translates to “what rocks!” However, neither explanation has been confirmed as fact.
In addition to these theories, the name has other possible origins. Some say it comes from an old-school fight song called "What Rocks!" while others believe its roots can be traced back to Native American tribes who used similar terms when referring to themselves or their territory (such as Hoya Saxa). Whatever its origin, though, one thing remains certain: The Georgetown Hoyas have become synonymous with excellence in college sports over time!

History of the Hoyas
In basketball, the Hoyas have won seven Big East regular season titles and four Big East Tournament championships since joining the conference in the 1979-80 season. They also reached five Final Fours (1982–1985 & 2007). In addition to that impressive resume of successful on-court performance, Georgetown was also able to bring home two National Championships (1984 & 1985) under legendary coach John Thompson Jr., who is still considered by many fans today as one of college basketball's all-time greatest coaches for his leadership and contributions with this team over two decades ago!
Football at Georgetown dates back even further than its hoops program - back into 1874 when they first began playing against other colleges/universities around Washington Dc area like George Washington University or Catholic University! Since then, they've achieved some amazing feats, such as Division I Bowl Games appearances three times between the 2002-2007 seasons, plus an induction into the College Football Hall Of Fame for former player Bill Carpenter who played from 1965 until 1968 setting numerous records along his journey there too!
Finally, we can't forget about lacrosse which has become increasingly popular within the last decade or so but started here at Georgetown almost fifty years ago and now won multiple National Titles throughout the mid-1970s up until the early 2000s while having several All-Americans play on these teams too - making them a true powerhouse within the sport itself both nationally internationally alike!!
